International Workers Memorial Day

Each year, the 28th April is dedicated as International Workers' Memorial Day.

The TUC website contains (amongst a lot of other material here)

'The purpose behind Workers' Memorial Day has always been to "remember the dead: fight for the living" and unions are asked to focus on both areas, by considering events or memorial to remember all those killed through work but at the same time ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated.'

Unfortunately, the day itself isn't particularly well known.  Many large businesses commemorate the day but it hardly gets a mention in the media.  Searching Google (other search providers are available) News gives 24 results, and all local media outlets.

The TUC site lists a range of memorial events on their page, ocassionally including a Mayor.

So it's out there but relatively low key.

Which is a shame as this year the recent building collapse in Bangladesh gave a stark reminder of the price people pay for poor management of health and safety in the 21st Century.  A building collapses, hundreds die and we have news for a few days.  Things go back to normal and people go back to work.  Today there will be more people killed and injured at work.  I wonder if that is what we consider, as a society, normal and acceptable?

“'Remember the dead: Fight for the living.'”
